Symmetree Osteopathy delivers trusted care to the local community in Mill Park.

If neck pain, stiffness, or discomfort is a concern, our trusted Osteopathic approach may be the answer you’ve been searching for.

Neck pain is prevalent, with one in 10 people affected. Modern lifestyle habits, such as sitting at a computer, extended TV viewing, and poor posture, particularly forward head posture, play a significant role.

Neck conditions can also trigger headaches, shoulder pain, jaw pain, pins and needles in the hands, carpal tunnel syndrome, and upper back discomfort.

If you frequently experience any of the following, we recommend scheduling a thorough assessment with one of our osteopaths. :

  • persistent neck ache first thing in the morning
  • neck stiffness when reversing the car
  • clicking neck noises when turning
  • constantly aching neck muscles
  • tingling in your hands or fingers

Causes

Neck pain is most commonly caused by poor posture. To understand its consequences, we must first explore why spinal alignment in the neck matters.

Your head weighs around 5 kg and is naturally balanced on your seven neck vertebrae. The muscles in your neck help maintain this position, but problems occur when we hold awkward postures for extended periods.

This disturbance in balance leads to strain and irritation of the muscles, nerves, joints, ligaments, and discs in your neck. For every 2-3 cm your head shifts forward, neck and shoulder tension doubles!

Neck strain and pressure gradually build, leading to pain, with even minor postural changes causing discomfort. Given the demands of modern living, it’s no surprise neck pain is widespread.

Other common causes of neck pain include whiplash, arthritis and sporting injuries.

Treatment

Fortunately, osteopathy provides an effective solution for neck pain. After a thorough history and examination, your Osteopath will develop a treatment plan to relieve pressure, restore movement, and prevent future issues.

Typically, your Osteopath will recommend the following:

  • postural advice and how to avoid further strain
  • a series of spinal mobilisations to restore proper movement to the neck vertebrae
  • neck exercises to encourage improved movement
  • neck strengthening exercises
  • heat/ice therapy to help manage your neck pain
  • recommend a contoured pillow to provide correct support while sleeping.
