What is pilates?

Our clinical pilates classes aim to improve flexibility, posture, strength and develop control and overall endurance in the body. It has also been linked with enhancing mental cognizance. It puts emphasis on alignment, breathing, developing a strong core, and improving coordination and balance.

Developed by Joseph Pilates during the First World War, its use was intended to aid the rehabilitation of injured and wounded soldiers. Joseph Pilates, upon developing this exercise system claimed he was 50 years ahead of his time.

Pilates is very similar to Yoga, both being considered mind-body exercises and underlining the importance of correct postures and poses. Pilates does however have a greater focus on strengthening the core stability muscles of the body.

Clinical Pilates often involves an initial assessment which considers existing health, physical condition and goals for completing a Clinical Pilates program. The physiotherapist or instructor will establish areas of improvement by creating a tailored, targeted program which focuses on your desired results.

Pilates aims to correct alignment and enable centering, control, balanced breathing, concentration and precision in order to achieve a strong, functional body.

How does Pilates work for my body?

Our bodies are made up of various layers of muscles from superficial to deep. Conventional exercise predominantly works our superficial muscles e.g. biceps, hamstrings.

Pilates targets our deep core muscles e.g. pelvic floor, deep abdominals. These deep muscles aid in stability around the joints of the body and are often very weak, leaving our joints vulnerable to injury.

Our team have found pilates extremely effective for:

  • Correcting muscle imbalance and posture
  • Increasing pelvis,  abdominal and shoulder stability
  • Reducing risk of injury
  • Rehabilitation after injury
  • Relieving chronic back pain
  • Improving motor control
  • Increased joint flexibility
  • Enhanced sporting performance
  • Greater self- confidence
  • Achieving a toned body
